Memory is generous. The trail a little longer, the water a little brighter, the whole coast softened by time.
Inspired by Maggie O’Farrell’s novel Land, a story of memory, mapmaking and the ground beneath us, this painting is part landscape, part aerial view, with a nod to old maps. Whimsical shapes drift like islands and inlets, charting a place that never quite existed. It carries the feel of the Pacific Northwest without pointing to any one spot.
Look long enough and you may find your own shoreline in here. Chances are it’s even better than you remember.
Acrylic and graphite on cradled canvas, 40 × 30 inches
